What AI can (and can't) do for your business right now

Most businesses use AI but few get real value from it. Here is what AI can and can't do for your business right now, and where it truly helps.

AI can do more than most leaders think, and less than the headlines promise. Both things are true at once. Knowing the difference is the whole game.

Right now, today, AI can take a huge amount of work off your team. It can also fall flat on the parts that matter most. The trick is knowing which is which before you spend a penny.

Most businesses use AI. Few get much from it

Here is a number worth sitting with. McKinsey found in 2025 that 78% of organisations now use AI in at least one part of the business. But only 6% count as high performers with it.

Read that again. Nearly everyone is using AI. Almost no one is getting real value from it.

That gap is not about the tools. It is about knowing what to point them at.

What AI can actually do

Start with what is real. AI is very good at repetitive work. The kind that follows a pattern.

It can pull numbers into a report. It can draft the first version of an email. It can sort a messy inbox, summarise a long document, and answer the same question a hundred times without getting tired.

This is not the future. It is available today. Your team could hand over these tasks this week.

What AI can't do

Now the other half, and it matters just as much. AI cannot build a relationship. It cannot read a room. It cannot make the judgement call that only comes from knowing your business.

It does not care about your clients. It cannot sit with a worried customer and make them feel heard. It cannot decide what your company should become.

Those things are still human. They always will be. That is not a flaw in the technology. It is the point.

The reframe most leaders miss

Here is the shift. The question is not "what can AI do?" That question sends you chasing features and shiny tools.

The better question is "what can only my people do?" Answer that, and everything else becomes a candidate for AI.

The work only humans can do stays with humans. The rest, the repeat work that drains them, goes to the machine. Simple to say. Powerful when you do it.

What it looks like up close

Picture your best salesperson. She closes deals because she listens well and builds trust. That is her gift.

Now look at her week. Hours of it go on updating the pipeline, writing follow-up notes, and copying details between systems. None of that is why you hired her.

This is a pattern we see across most of the businesses we work with. The human skill gets squeezed into the gaps, while the busywork takes the main stage.

Hand the busywork to AI, and she gets her selling time back. That is not a small win. That is more deals from the same person.

Start by drawing the line

You do not need a big project to begin. You need one clear line. On one side, the work only your people can do. On the other, the work that repeats.

Walk through one person's week and sort it. Most leaders are surprised how much sits on the repeat side. That is where AI earns its place.

Get the line right, and AI stops being a gamble. It becomes the most obvious thing in the world.

So here is the one to sit with. If you sorted your team's week into "only human" and "everything else," how big would that second pile be?
